This app keeps a record of which questions you have already been asked. That is the whole point of it — you never see the same question twice — and it is the reason anything is stored at all.
Everything below describes what the app actually does, not what a template says an app might do. There is no advertising, no analytics service, no tracking across other sites and apps, and nothing is sold or shared for marketing.
What is stored
From the moment you start playing
You can play without giving any details at all. The first time you open the app it creates a random identifier for you and puts it in a cookie. That identifier is not linked to your name, your email address or your device until you choose to create an account.
- A random account identifier, held in a signed cookie called
gkq_uid. - Which questions you have been shown, so you are never shown them again.
- Your answers: the question, what you chose, whether it was right, the points, and when.
- Totals worked out from those answers — questions answered, accuracy, current and best streak, and how you do by category and difficulty.
- Your daily quiz for each day and how you did on it.
If you create an account
- Your email address. It is used to sign you in and nothing else. No marketing, and it is never shown to another player.
- Not your password. Passwords are never stored. What is kept is a one-way hash, which cannot be turned back into your password by us or by anyone who obtained the database.
- A display name, if you set one. This is public — see below.
- A one-way hash of your recovery code, if you create one. The code itself is shown to you once and never stored, which is why nobody can tell you what it was if you lose it.
- Failed sign-in attempts against an email address, so that repeated guessing can be slowed down.
If you connect with friends
- Who you are connected to, and the invite links you have created.
If you turn on the daily reminder
- A notification token for that device, issued by Apple. It is what lets one notification reach that phone and nothing else; it is not a name, and it cannot be used to identify you elsewhere.
- How far your clock is from UTC, and the hour you asked to be reminded, so the reminder arrives in the evening where you are rather than where the server is.
- The date the last reminder was sent, which is what stops a second one going out the same day.
Reminders are off unless you turn them on, and turning them off in the app or in your iPhone's settings stops them. One a day at most, and none at all on a day you have already played.
On your device only
A few preferences are kept in your browser's local storage and never sent anywhere: your light or dark theme, your chosen category and difficulty, which quiz mode you last used, and whether you have dismissed the prompt offering to save your progress.
What other players can see
On the leaderboard, other players see your display name — or, if you have not set one, a tag such as “Guest 7K2” — along with your score, how many questions you have answered and your accuracy.
Your email address is never shown to anyone. Neither is your account identifier. If you would rather not appear on the open leaderboard at all, you can turn that off in the app.
Who else handles it
- Cloudflare hosts the app and its database. Because they deliver every request, they handle connection information including your IP address, as any web host does. This is used to serve the site and to protect it from abuse.
- Anthropic is used to write new quiz questions, so the app never runs out. What is sent is the instructions for writing questions and the text of questions already in the bank, so that new ones are not duplicates. No player information is sent — not your email address, not your answers, not your identifier.
No other third party receives anything. There are no advertising networks, no analytics SDKs and no social media trackers in this app.
How long it is kept
Your history is kept for as long as you have an account, because that is what stops questions repeating. If you stop using the app it simply sits there until you delete it.
Deleting everything
In the app, open Account and choose Delete account. That removes your account, your answers, your statistics, your streaks, your daily quizzes and your friend connections — permanently, straight away, with no waiting period and no way to restore it afterwards.
If you have never created an account, the same screen offers to delete the history held against this device.
Quiz questions themselves are not personal data and stay in the bank; what is deleted is the record that you were shown them, so they become new again for whoever plays next.
Your rights
This app is run from the United Kingdom and follows UK data protection law. You have the right to ask what is held about you, to have it corrected, and to have it deleted. Deletion is built into the app so you do not have to ask anyone. For anything else, or to complain, contact us at the address below.
You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
This app is a general knowledge quiz suitable for a wide audience, but it is not directed at children under 13, and accounts are not knowingly created for them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and it will be deleted.
Changes
If what the app collects changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top changes too.
